Well, Aanand L Rai is one filmmaker who took chances in Indian cinema and brought the bold narrative. Today on his 49th birthday, we celebrate many of his masterpieces. Right from Tanu Weds Manu (2011) to Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan (2020), Aanand L Rai and his production company Colour Yellow Productions have always touched topics which many might not find comfortable to even talk about.
When most of the filmmakers preferred the foreign locales and shoot overseas, here’s a filmmaker who showed the beauty in Hindi cinema by showing us India’s heartland. Aanand L Rai is one of the filmmakers who changed the narrative of Indian films with every project of his. He backed projects as a producer that brought unique content. While Nil Battey Sannata (2016) dealt with a mother who wanted to educate herself to earn her daughter’s respect, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan franchise talks about a man’s take on love when posed with challenges. While the first instalment (2017) dealt with erectile dysfunction, the sequel (2020) made a homosexual love story mainstream. Films like Newton (2017), Mukkabaaz (2018), Meri Nimmo (2018), Manmarziyaan (2018) and Tumbbad (2018) just speak of the director’s confidence in backing projects that tell a great story. His last directorial Zero (2018) starring Shah Rukh Khan showed that King Khan can surprise us n small package!
