Ram Gopal Varma may be controversial for his tweets and opinions, but it mostly passes with time. But recently, he was booked by the police in connection with his recently announced film, Murder. The Telangana Police booked the director and his producer, Natti Karuna, as they received about the film, which is based on the honour killing of Pranay Perumalla.
For the uninitiated, Pranay was murdered by his father-in-law, Maruthi Rao, because his daughter married Pranay, who belonged to a lower caste, against his wish. The court issued an order to book RGV and the producer after Pranay’s father, Balaswamy, filed a petition. He also had an issue with how the makers were using pictures of his son and daughter-in-law without his consent.
According to a The News Minute report, the director-producer have been booked under section 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), as well as other sections of the Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Amendment Act.
RGV took to his Twitter, responding to the petition, and tweeted that his advocates will respond on the issue. He also said that he didn’t mean to demean anyone through his film and that he will abide by what the law says.
Here are his tweets:
I specifically mentioned that I have no intention to demean or degrade anyone and my film is just a creative work based on a subject which is in the public domain ..But as a citizen who respects the law i too will proceed legally to protect my fundamental rights pic.twitter.com/61PlT8kUBW
